The branch

Twisted and useless,
Purposeless, sapless
The branch lies at
The cold feet of the
Lady it cannot now
Serve. Pared off,
Stripped of rank
And demoted to
A weak obstruction
In the overflowing
Gutter: a rude toy
For boys' idleness.

No more growth,
No sharing roots,
No mutual twine,
No swaying breeze,
No catching sun,
No hope of leaves.
"Oh what a misery it is to have an intellect in splints".
