The glen

The glen

Enough of your mulchy paths,
Your crestfallen gabions and
Beercan bushes, fag packet
Lanes and rubble strewn top:

My half-hearted, part-time
Stewardship must end with
A prising off of boots and
Hanging up sodden fleece.

I have picked the undergrowth
Clean for the last time, pulled
From the wet earth my final
Tumble of mazy brambles.

I have planted, to vandals
Mirth, many a sapling to
See it mocked, root-side
And floating in distress.

No more fires to quench,
Or remnants to scour,
Chipping away surface,
Layers by layer a time.

You waters that my feet
Have disturbed, hands
Greedy for discovery,
Won't regret the spoils

I all too eagerly claimed
From their ancient store.
Spirits of the glen if such
There be, may you rest

At ease, for guardians
Are but custodians of
A day. Green jackets
Will ever keep watch.

Saturn, look at the date! Tomorrow is ten years since you joined the forum. You must drink a glass a claret to that!

Blimey you're right! Claret's not my thing but I may raise a glass of something to that!

How in the heck did I miss this one? I agree with Raphael: really like that this poem not only has deep, personal feelings & great visuals, there's also the dynamic of motion in it, as well.

Thanks again, Saturn, for sharing another one of your powerfully profound poems. Also, I hope you enjoyed that 10th anniversary glass of whatever it was. With that milestone in mind & with sincerest appreciation, I'm raising my glass to you now. Cheers & Best Wishes! :D
