Finished article

I ring from the chisel's bite,
Rough hewn, a steel fresh
Work in progress, marked
With every blow, not yet
Carved to alabaster sheen.

I am my own sculptor, as
Are we all. We must seek
The uneven imperfections
And land a mark that will
Obliterate or soften them

To a finish more pleasing
That will stand the test
Of the weathering and
Beatings of every knock
We will receive in a life.

We are not gallery ready:
We none of us arrive as
Gleaming as an Apollo,
Plinth shimmering to the
World as a finished article.
