The Disciple Whom Jesus Loved

Beloved disciple! What a joy to be so-called:

To know all blisses nigh, all fears forestalled

What time you leaned upon Christ's breast.

For you to act in simple faithfulness

Must have encompassed all your want:

Let he who wishes be an aspirant

For seat upon his right hand or his left!

The berth you own already is the cleft,

The shelter to which thousands longing flee.

Should you be known to all posterity

As aged saint, vouchsafed a vision bright

I would not think your story told aright-

At least, I sooner would begin elsewhere:

With head reclined and heart left to his care.
upon my life, Sir Nevis, I am piqued!
