Love Alone

Love Alone

melon rind moon
leaves a ring in the sky,
a fruit juice halo
malted, cold

it’s mother’s milk to the children of dusk
those born to taste twilight cream—
that gap between
when passion boils away the day,
yearning drizzles over stars

they suckle greedily
from lunatic intimations—
jellied june yellows, november reds—
their wishes, humors fluffed
for a few coated seasons

when January’s glaze
hardens everything watchfully whipped, foamed
they become brittle,
learning the ingredient of their divinity is also spun sugar—
not love alone
"I am certain of nothing but the holiness of the heart's affections and the Truth of Imagination."
